Back Rooms is still alpha, beta, raw, sketchy, flimsy, fragile but it has also matured a lot in the last week. a LOT OF features were added, most notably:

  • one-step UNDO function
  • multiple entites can be GROUPED now to move or delete them all at once or create a new room
  • CLUSTERS view which explodes entities that are overlapping
  • live RECORD compositions
  • create a MIDI clock to sync with other application ( e.g Ableton Live )
  • entities can be controlled externally via OSC
  • application builds for macOS, Linux and Windows

  • CLUSTERS: entities whose icons overlap ( e.g on the same transporter ) get a dotted ring. hovering explodes the cluster, its icons are arranged on a circle around it with a line to their actual positions, so every member can be picked and tweaked. global parameter EXPLODE_HOVER, u ( UNSTACK ) explodes with it OFF ( see DESIGN-cluster.md )
  • UNDO: META + z takes back the last edit, pressing it again REDOes. one step, so two states can be compared by ear. while an operation is in progress it cancels that operation instead ( see DESIGN-undo.md )
  • CONSOLE in INFO: lists the last messages ( edits, UNDO …, REDO …, SAVED, RECORD ON, … )
  • GROUPING: select a set of entities with r + MOVE ( rectangle ), SHIFT / ALT + r or CLICK to add / remove. drag ( d ) or delete ( x ) the set, META + g GROUPs it into a new room, META + SHIFT + g UNGROUPs a room ( see DESIGN-grouping.md )
  • RECORD: META + SHIFT + r records the output into recordings/YYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM-SS.wav of the project ( stereo, 32-bit float )
  • CLOCK: global BPM drives a beat counter. transporters with SYNC travel in BEATS per traversal, restarts snap to QUANTIZE. --midi-clock-out sends it as MIDI clock ( see DESIGN-clock.md )
  • OSC: --osc lets other applications control PLAY and MUTE ( see DESIGN-osc.md )
  • Q manipulator ( m + 6 ): moves the filter resonance in octaves
  • META + CLICK enters / leaves PARAMETER MODE on the entity under the mouse
  • all generators ( oscillator, sample, SAM, room ) draw a level ring while they sound
  • rooms without a listener inside show NO LISTENER
  • UNDERRUN counter in INFO
  • splash screen
  • app-state.json remembers SNAP, GRID, INFO + OPS visibility and fullscreen between sessions

  • key command modifiers are shown as icons ( ⌘, ⌥, ⇧ ). META is COMMAND on macOS and CTRL on Linux and Windows
  • ESC leaves PARAMETER MODE ( was SHIFT + p ) and clears the set

    on macOS you will get a "Back Rooms" Not Opened warning. just click Done and allow the app to run by going to System Settings… > Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway. it s apples way of telling you i did not pay 100€/year for their developers license ;) ↩
